This is kind of short - we got out early rather than late for the first time ever.:p Our TA took pity on us when he found out that only two people had actually finished the book.:D

Something off topic, but I forgot to mention this before: we (briefly) discussed the suitability of the LOTR actors last week, and my TA did almost an exact impression of aussiepeach's Legolas icon.:D It was awesome.

LOTR is an extremely popular book. Translated into 30-odd languages, always at the top of "best books of the century" polls, more copies sold than any other book except the Bible.

But it shouldn't beCollapse )

This week we're focusing on the realistic aspects of LOTR (later: fairy tale origins and myth: see syllabus). Today we talked about evil.

I think we're discussing good in LOTR on Wednesday, which should be more fun. And for Friday we're supposed to read "The Homecoming of Beorthnoth Beorhthelm's Son" which is about 25 pages and which you can download here (both username and password: tolkein).

All those suckers who are taking the class for credit have to write a second paper, mwahaha. I just realized the other day that I'll never have to write an English paper again, unless I do something stupid like take an English class that I don't need (again). It's kind of sad.

But not really.

Alas, no such luck.;) We just had two weeks off: two weeks ago was preparing for the midterm and the test itself, and then last week was going over papers and stuff. So I skipped class for two weeks, and my noon hours were much bleaker for it. Though having lunch was a nice change...

Anyway, we start back up again tomorrow with, joy of joys, LOTR! Specifically evil in LOTR. And I start trying once more to get through That Hideous Strength, so I'll be ready for our discussion of it next week.

Now, I know I said I'd get the notes on All Hallows Eve up at some point. But it's late, and I'm still sick, and I have a test tomorrow, and still have to learn about DNA transcription. So how about this: I'll put up Wednesday's lecture, which is about magic and really cool. If anyone wants the lectures specifically on Williams and AHE, say so, and I'll put them up when I can. For now...

What is magic?Collapse )

I know this is late - I updated last weekend and was all ready to submit when Internet Explorer encountered a problem and needed to close. The fact that they were sorry for any inconvenience, oddly enough, did not ease my frustration. I was so mad (and so busy) that I never got around to rewriting the post. So here it is. Kind of short (it's late and I'm tired), so if you want more on anything, just comment and I'll happily discuss more.:)

I'm just going to put all the notes for this week in one entry, I think - or maybe not, I took more notes than I thought I did...Anyway, I hope no one here's a huge Charles Williams fan and has been eagerly waiting for lots of goodies on "All Hallows Eve," because we've barely discussed the book yet: some comparisons to Tolkien's and Lewis's stuff on Monday, and a big discussion about magic Wednesday. Which is fine with me, as I didn't read the book.:o (I've been busy! It pretty much came down to reading "All Hallows Eve" or studying for my physics test and reading Neil Gaiman's new book, and, well, the choice wasn't hard.)
